AN IMAGE, A SOUND

AN IMAGE, A SOUND — 2024

Tom Andries
€ 900 incl. vat

Tom (Boute) cherishes the music of Karate and considers bassist Jeff Goddard one of his greatest musical inspirations. The day fate brought them together therefore holds a special place in his memories. A chance meeting with unexpected consequences: not only did he buy the bass guitar that can be heard on all of Karate's albums; when Goddard decided to go back on tour with Karate, he suggested that Tom take his place with the band Monogold. Which he did.

This story also came up during a dinner with Tom (Andries) and his wife. And a line from one of Tom's favourite Karate songs (Bass Sounds): ‘An image, a sound, they are one in the same. Just one likes to move and one stays the same.’ A phrase that led to philosophical thoughts over a late-night coffee.

Inspired by these words, Tom (Boute) challenged Tom (Andries) to get creative with them.

This challenge took Tom Andries back to his roots in graphic design, where he could experiment with letters and typography. The result is a typographic artwork: the word ‘IMAGE’, where each letter is filled with a corresponding letter of the word ‘SOUND’ - a symmetrical combination made possible by the equal number of letters in both words.
